The Emerald Ash Borer(EAB),is an exotic beetle that was discovered in southeastern Michigan near Detroit in the summer of 2002. EAB probably arrived in the United States on solid wood packing material carried in cargo ships or airplanes originating in its native Asia. Since this time the Emerald Ash Borer has spread into 24 states and is approaching Nebraska through Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. In May of 2013 EAB was confirmed in Creston Iowa. This is 85 miles east of the Omaha Metro area.
The Emerald Ash Borer has not been confirmed in Nebraska. Unfortunately this insect is very hard to detect early on, in most cases it has been in an area for 3-5 years before it is discovered. This has proven to be challenging for communities with EAB, often times the insect is discovered too late for treatment. Without treatment the trees have no chance of survival.
Since the Creston find, Enfield's Tree Service has been working diligently to prepare for the inevitable arrival of EAB. In the fall of 2014 we decided to proceed with a proactive plan for EAB prevention. The products we are using are very effective. The preferred treatment lasts for 2 years with a 96-99% success rate. Additionally, it controls all of the native borers we have in the area.
