ABOUT THE HENNESSY HOMEBREW EMPORIUM

Founded in 1984 and incorporated in February 1988, HHE is one of New York's best homebrew suppliers. The store is owned and run by Roger Savoy, Anita Savoy (Roger's wife), and Bruce Lucier. Roger has been brewing making wine for over thirty years and beer for more than a decade. He is past President of the Home Wine and Beer Trade Association and has taken wine classes at the Cornell Hotel School and beer judge certification classes. Bruce has been doing brewing and vinting since 1997. Most weekdays you'll find Mark Plaat, who manages the store, taking care of the store. .

We carry True Brew and Brewer's Best boxed ingredient kits, as well as canned kits and ingredients from Alexander's, Briess, Brewferm, Coopers, Mountmellick, and Muntons. Additionally, we stock dozens of grains, hops, yeast, spices, adjuncts, and chemicals (such as brewing salts and cleansers), not to mention the gadgets that you 'really need' (or so you told your significant other) to make that special brew. This means that we stock the largest variety of beer-making supplies in the area at the best prices. 'Brown Box Beer' kits and 'Clones of the Month' allow you to broaden your repertoire of recipes at reduced cost..

Vintners--you'll also be pleased with the variety our store offers. You'll find Selection, Selection International, Selection Estate, Vintner's Reserve, and Vino del Vida wine ingredient kits, offering everything from light white wines such as Chablis and Riesling to full-bodied reds like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. We also have all the goodies (equipment, additives, and accessories) you're likely to need; if we don't have it, we can probably special-order it. If demand allows, we'll increase the variety of wine-related items, so come on in and force us to stock up.

Have you considered other beverages? One old specialty drink is mead: 'Nectar of the Gods.' Although fermentation takes a while longer, this honey-based wine is easy to make. We now stock several varieties of honey so you can make mead, and have it your way. You can also make your own soda, liqueurs, and vinegar.

Looking for a gift for that hard-to-buy-for person? How about a gift certificate? They're available in any denomination.

In short, we want to make it easy and fun for you to make wine and beer. And we'd love to hear from you, whether it's a suggestion or just to say 'hi.' Just drop us a postcard or letter, or e-mail us at while saying these words:

'I will make it felony to drink small beer.'

ABOUT THE MODERN HOMEBREW EMPORIUM
The Modern Brewer opened for business in 1990. After a few years of retail sales, the business relocated to Davis Square and evolved into a Brew-On-Premise while aspiring to be a microbrewery. You may recall the Fat Cat ESB, currently under license to Ipswitch / Mercury Brewing Company. Unfortuantly, this growth proved to be too much, too soon and the business returned to it's current location and previous concentration on retail. In 2003(?), Roger & West Boylston owner Bruce were in Boston for a pint and they stopped in to see the place. The owner was looking to move on and thus the Modern Brewer became the Modern Homebrew Emporium. Today, we focus on the personal interaction with everything from helping you select the best ingredients for your next batch, to helping you decide what kind of mash tun would be best for the all-grain system you're planning.

Most days you will find our manager, Randy Baril, behind the counter. He has been brewing for 8 years and delights in introducing new people to the hobby. Having worked in a brewery on their bottling line, he also is quite knowledgable in kegging and bottling techniques. A working member of CASC (the group that brings you NERAX), he is also very supportive of cask ale and bottle-conditioned session ales.

Adam Threlkeld, a full time employee, has been with the shop for almost a year and a half.   Earl Larson began working at the Modern Homebrew Emporium in 2006.  Since 2007, however, he only works in the shop occasionally, mostly during the busy holiday season.  Earl hasbeen homebrewing for over 12 years.

West Boylston is also kind enough to lend us Robert Chasse' (manager) for Fridays and Saturdays, he started brewing in 2000. A commited extract brewer (including Kit & Kilo), he believes that good beer is but a small tweak and yeast selection away. See the West Boylston shop for more info.
